Dr. Nakatani is known as one of the leading opinion leaders in Japan. He has made various contributions to intellectual community as well as Japan's policy making process. Indeed, he has contributed over the last three decades as an academic, critic, policy adviser and business leader to shaping the intellectual debate about Japan's economic circumstance or to influencing policy directions of the Japanese government in many ways.
Among his many roles as public policy adviser, he served on Prime Minister Hosokawa's Structural Reform Council under the Chairmanship of Gaishi Hiraiwa in 1993, and himself played the role as deputy chairman of late Prime Minister Obuchi's Economic Strategy Council in 1998. In August, 2004, Professor Nakatani was presented with an Honorary Degree of Law from the Australian National University in recognition of his contribution to academia, international community and the corporate world.
Professor Nakatani was inaugurated as Emeritus Professor of Hitotsubashi University in April, 2005.
Dr. Nakatani is the author of a large number of best selling books and articles, including Introduction to Macroeconomics which has been one of the best-selling macroeconomics textbooks in Japan, The e-Economy Shock; IT Power; The Essence of Economics; The Borderless Economy; Towards the Revival of Japanese Corporations; and The Historical Transformation of the Japanese Economy. In 1988, he won the Ishibashi Tanzan Prize for Japan's Choice as a Responsible Nation. He has contributed numerous columns to Japan's leading newspapers and he is a widely recognised TV commentator.
Dr. Nakatani was born in Osaka on 22 January 1942 and undertook his schooling in Osaka and gained entry to Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo in 1961 and completed his undergraduate degree with a major in economics in 1965. He married Tomoko Muramatsu in 1966 and they have three children.
On graduation, he joined Nissan Motor Company and was soon appointed to its export division. In 1969 he took up the Ph.D program in economics at Harvard University. He completed his doctorate under Kenneth Arrow in 1973, was appointed lecturer in economics at Harvard and was recruited to Osaka University as Associate Professor in 1974. In 1984, he was appointed Professor at Osaka and in 1991 he returned to a chair in Hitotsubashi University's business school. In 1999, he resigned his Professorship at Hitotsubashi in order to accept an invitation to join Sony Corporation as an outside member of the Board of Directors and subsequently was appointed in June 2003 as the first outside Chairman of the Sony's Board of Directors.
Professor Nakatani is Director of Research at the Mitsubishi-UFJ Research and Consulting Co.,LTD. He also serves as an outside director of ASKUL Corporation and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation.
