Interview from the “Quarterly Journal of Public Policy & Management”

Yuichiro Anzai, President of Keio University

Japan is currently facing an aging and declining population. One of the most important issues that the country must deal with is education and development of human resources in order to position itself properly in globalized society. Amidst the current economic crisis, dubbed as once in a century, the value of education and human resources development is ever more significant.
Yuichiro Anzai, President of Keio University and professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology of the university, chaired the “Education Rebuilding Council” to study how education should function in the 21st century, and submitted its third report on February 9, 2009.
In order to address the deterioration of Japan’s economy that was triggered by the global financial crisis, the Prime Minister held the “Advisory Meeting on Overcoming the Economic Crisis”, consisting of leading experts from various fields. The purpose of such meeting is to advise the Prime Minister in a comprehensive manner on how to steer Japan’s economic and fiscal policies for the future. Professor Yuichiro Anzai received an invitation to attend the meeting, at which he proposed the “realization of a nation based on lifelong learning, information economy, medical care security, and standardized education for all”.
In this issue’s interview by our Editor-in-Chief, Professor Anzai expresses his views on the true nature of open and diverse education in the age of globalization.
