We are pleased to announce that Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting Co., Ltd.(Headquartered in Tokyo, President: Satoshi Murabayashi, also “MURC”) and RLDatix (CEO:Jeff Surges ) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU marks the two firms’ cooperation in information sharing and project formulation for “utilization of technology for the safety of patients and health personnel in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).”

The Center on Global Health Architecture at MURC is working to resolve global health issues, especially those of infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases and aging, as well as of health systems. Focusing the potential of digital health and data health, we are engaged in various activities. For example, we build partnerships with major organizations in global health such as Chatham House in the UK to organize symposiums; we support policy formulation and implementation to overcome health-related issues with digital technology in low- and middle-income countries; we collaborate with business partners to build the public health infrastructure with drones to deliver medical supplies in Africa; and in October 2020, we launched the WELCO Lab as an initiative to promote the activities of private companies in the field of global health,1 to name a few.

RLDatix has been working to develop and disseminate technology for patient safety for more than 30 years, contributing to improving the safety of patients and health personnel at medical institutions in as many as 19 countries by utilizing digital technology. Specifically, RLDatix provides different software such as for risk management for healthcare professionals, improvement of patient satisfaction, and for infectious disease surveillance. RLDatix also provides consulting services and technology for corporate risk mitigation. Recently, RLDatix has created a form template that aligns with the US VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) reporting fields, which can be built into a healthcare organization’s RLDatix system to simplify the reporting process of safety issues with approved vaccines such as COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the WHO’s Fact Sheet on patient safety, the occurrence of adverse events due to unsafe care is likely one of the 10 leading causes of death and disability in the world. Each year, 134 million adverse events occur in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries, due to unsafe care, resulting in 2.6 million deaths. In addition, investments in reducing patient harm can lead to significant financial savings2. Providing medical services that emphasize patient safety has become a priority issue in recent years.

Under such circumstances, MURC and RLDatix have signed a MoU to contribute to solving the above problems by utilizing the knowledge and networks of both parties, and will promote cooperation in the following three areas:

  1. Formulation of a project in LMICs (e.g. Botswana, etc.) for improvement of patient and health personnel safety with introduction of hand hygiene and information technology;
  2. Information sharing on potential introduction of technology for patient safety in LMICs; and
  3. Information sharing and introduction to relevant experts in Japan on the long-term care/care home segment in Japan from MURC to RLDatix.

As the COVID-19 is rampant around the world, we aim to promote safe and quality medical services and as a result contribute in achieving universal health coverage.
